I am: Marieme

My Story:

I was too young to really know what was happening on September 11, 2001, but I have seen the impact of that event on the world, and my community.

I am a New Yorker, an American, and a Muslim, and how I perceive all of those things were changed on that day.

My family is Senegalese, but I was born and raised in New York City. I have come-of-age is in a post 9/11 world, and living as a Muslim-American, in New York City, has been challenging. But, it is a microcosm of what is happening around the world, with so much ignorance and xenophobia on all sides of the new “clash of civilizations”

My Film: Sacred Ground

Synopsis:

How do we move on from September 11th as a city and a nation?

MARIEME-Reel Lives

As the divide between the Islamic world and the West continues to be the focal point of global conflict, irrational prejudice against Muslims rages in New York City. The building of the Downtown Islamic Center has become a focal point for this anger and hatred. My film explores this anger, and the effects of it.
